Federal workers’ compensation program will monitor prescription opioid use

Effective June 26, 2017, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs instituted procedures to monitor and manage opioid prescription use under the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act.

The Division of Federal Employees’ Compensation (DFEC) established a prior authorization process for opioid prescriptions. Prior authorization requires any physician prescribing a compounded opioid medication to complete a Letter of Medical Necessity certifying that he or she has considered other treatment options. It also certifies that the treating physician will appropriately monitor the use of these highly addictive medications.

This prior authorization process will later be expanded to include individuals who seek to fill new prescriptions for opioid medications.

President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order on March 29, 2017, establishing the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report more than 15,000 people died from overdoses involving prescription opioid medications in 2015.
