According to Safewise, a home burglary happens every 41 seconds, with an average loss of $6,000. Most break-ins occur during the day when thieves expect you to be at work, school, or running errands.
Even the safest neighborhoods can be targets. Use these tips to help secure your home.
1. Keep all your doors and windows locked, even when you’re at home.
Before leaving the house—even for a few minutes—check that all doors and windows are securely locked. Make sure each exterior door has a deadbolt lock for added security.
2. Install a home security system.
Always set your alarm when you’re away or asleep. To deter thieves, post signs in your yard showing your home is protected by a security system.
3. Get to know your neighbors.
Knowing the people nearby makes it easier to spot strangers. Consider starting a neighborhood watch with your local police to help discourage thieves.
4. Don’t hide a key to your home outside.
Give a key to a trusted friend or neighbor instead. If you must hide one, use a combination lockbox—not under a mat or inside a fake rock. Burglars know the usual hiding spots.
5. Install motion sensor lighting around your home’s exterior, especially near doorways.
Motion sensors can spotlight anyone trying to break in after dark.
6. Keep lights or a radio on when you’re not home.
Burglars often look for empty homes and may move on if they hear signs of someone inside.
7. Secure your vehicle.
If you park outside, always lock your car and avoid leaving valuables inside. Even in safe neighborhoods, unlocked cars can be easy targets.
8. If you have a home safe, bolt it to the floor.
Burglars usually won’t try to break into a safe on the spot, but they may steal one that’s portable and unsecured.
9. Place a hold on your mail while you’re away.
If you’ll be out of town for a few days or more, use the USPS Hold Mail service to pause your mail. You can make the request online up to 30 days in advance.
10. Make sure you have adequate insurance.
With an average loss of $2,799 from home burglaries, having the right homeowners or renters insurance is important. Keeping a home inventory—including serial numbers for electronics—can help you track your belongings and their value.
